Meeting Jesus in Mark

Mark 9:40-50 – Jesus’ Warning About Hell

 1. Defining what can send you to Hell. Mark 9:40-48

  • Doctrinal error can lead you to Hell. Mark 9:40-42
  • Doing good can send you to hell. Mark 9:43-44
  • Doing nothing can send you to hell. Mark 9:45-46
  • Desiring the world can send you to hell. Mark 9:47-48

2. Description of Hell.

  • Purpose: originally for the Devil and his angels, it expresses the final justice and wrath of God, and is the destination of those who reject Christ, and thus are aligned with the Devil.
  • It is a place. Two places, Sheol or Hades, where unbelievers are held until the final judgment, Luke 16:25-28; Hebrews 9:27.Gehenna (Lake of Fire, the Second death), John 5:27-29; Revelation 20:14-15.

 3. Direction on how you can miss Hell. Mark 9:49-50

  • Often, salt was used throughout the Bible to symbolize the presence of God’s grace and the response of faith to His salvation, His promises, His Word.
  • The one direction, the one way which anyone can avoid Hell is by trusting in the Lord Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins.  Ephesians 2:8-9; Acts 16:31.
